Getting started

How do I record?

Open the app and press the red Record key. Press Pause to pause and resume, and Stop to finish. When you stop, you can name the recording, save it, or discard it.

Tap Mark at any time while recording to drop a mark on the moment.

How does the scrubber work?

Drag the handle on the half-circle dial left or right to rewind or fast-forward. A small nudge moves slowly; sliding further moves faster. When you let go, it springs back to the middle and playback carries on. You can also drag the waveform to scrub one-to-one.

How do I change the speed or loop a section?

Tap the speed chip at the bottom-left of the display to cycle through 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, 2×, 0.75× and 0.5×. Tap the loop icon to cycle between no loop, looping the whole recording, or looping the stretch between the marks around the playhead.

The app can’t hear anything, or it says microphone access is off.

Open the iPhone’s Settings app, find The Psalmist Recorder, and turn on Microphone. Also check that no other app is using the microphone, such as a phone call.

How do I record over part of a recording?

Open the recording, move to where you want the new take to start, and press Record. The new take replaces that part. Choose Undo Record-Over from the ⋮ menu in the Recordings list to bring the previous version back.

Transcripts and editing

Why doesn’t transcription work on my iPhone?

Transcription uses Apple’s speech recognition on your iPhone and needs iOS 26 or later. On iOS 18 the transcript features are switched off, and the Menu says so. The first time you use it, your iPhone may need to download a language model, which needs a Wi-Fi connection once.

Transcripts, live or saved, are part of Psalmist Pro. Recording and playback are always free.

How do I transcribe a recording?
  • In the Recordings list, tap ⋮ on a recording and choose Transcribe.
  • Or open the editor, tap ••• and choose Transcribe.
  • To do it automatically, open Menu › Transcriptions and turn on Auto-Transcribe.
Does editing change my original recording?

No. Edits (trim, split, fade, volume, EQ) are saved alongside the recording. The original audio is never changed, so you can undo, redo, or choose Revert Edits in the ••• menu to go back to the start.

How do I export or share a recording?

Open the recording in the editor, tap •••, then Export. Choose m4a (the usual choice), wav (uncompressed) or MP3, or export the transcript as text, with or without times. You can also share audio from the ⋮ menu in the Recordings list.

Psalmist Pro and purchases

What does Pro include, and what does it cost?

Pro is a one-time purchase, with no subscription and no account. It unlocks transcripts, trim, split, fade and volume editing, EQ, noise reduction, Tidy Up, and iCloud storage. Recording, playback, the scrubber, marks, the library and both themes stay free. The price shown in the app at purchase is the one that applies in your country.

I bought Pro but it isn’t unlocked, or I have a new iPhone.

Open any locked feature (for example, tap TRIM in the editor) to see the Pro screen, then tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you’re signed in to the same Apple Account you bought with.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and request a refund for The Psalmist Recorder.

Storage and privacy

Where are my recordings stored?

On your iPhone, inside the app. If you turn on Menu › Storage › Save in iCloud (a Pro feature), they’re saved in your own iCloud Drive instead. We never see them either way. If you delete the app without iCloud turned on, its recordings are deleted with it, so export anything you want to keep first.

I deleted a recording by mistake.

Open Recordings › Recently Deleted. Deleted recordings stay there for 30 days and can be restored.

How do I change the app icon or switch to dark mode?

Open Menu › Appearance. Choose Automatic, Light or Dark, then pick one of nine app icons.

What information do you collect?

None. See the privacy policy.
